One Good Project Leads to Another
The projects educational content coordinator worked closely with teachers to make the series more useful to educational community. The video, teachers guide and timeline were well received, and initial classroom use stimulated new ideas. We explored ways to organize content across all media enabling teachers to find lessons correlating with local education standards. An online Colorado model content standards summary and chart provide an overview that is easily updated as new programs are created.
Schools and prospective travelers continue to use the many resources on the Americas Byways website. The San Juan Skyway project resulted in continued funding for additional programs plus corresponding website and printed educational material. Rocky Mountain PBS has since produced additional programs for this series, including Los Caminos Antiguos, Peak-to-Peak Highway, Santa Fe Trail and Frontier Pathways.
Creative on a Budget
Cost was reduced for the printed guide by using four-color only on the cover, while interior pages were printed in two PMS colors. Screening and overprinting premixed inks on these pages created a wide range of values and tones, increasing visual interest. This technique is particularly effective when the two colors are opposite in temperature. As demonstrated in this project, orange (warm) and purple (cool) combine to create various shades of tans and browns. |
